Latin Postdoc Opportunity at Birmingham

Writer: W. Andrew SmithW. Andrew Smith

In conjunction with the AHRC-DFG GALaCSy project, a full-time, 24-month research fellowship is now being advertised at ITSEE in the University of Birmingham to work on the Old Latin tradition of the Epistle to the Galatians. The research fellow will take responsibility for preparing the Vetus Latina edition of Galatians and analysing and providing Latin evidence for the Editio Critica Maior of the Greek text of this epistle currently in preparation at Birmingham.

The intended start date is 1 September 2022, but there is some scope for flexibility.

Applications should be received through the University’s online jobs portal before 11 April 2022, where the post is described as “Research Fellow – Philosophy, Theology and Religion – Grade 7 – 99276 (Job Number: 220000GB)”: see https://bham.taleo.net/careersection/external/jobdetail.ftl?job=220000GB

The postholder is expected to hold (or to be near completion of) a doctorate in New Testament, Early Christianity or Classics, with excellent ability in Latin and Koine Greek. They should have experience of working with biblical manuscripts and digital corpora, and familiarity with patristic writings. They should be able to work to an exceptional level of accuracy with attention to detail. The ability to read secondary literature in German would be an advantage, as would experience of electronic editing tools and the preparation of material for publication.

It is anticipated that the research fellow will participate in team meetings with the German project partners who are working on the Coptic tradition of the Pauline Epistles, and take part in the project’s final conference early in 2025.

Interviews are expected to be held in the last week of April. Informal enquiries or requests for further information should be addressed directly to me (https://birmingham.ac.uk/HAGHoughton) and not by replying to the whole list.
